Hi All,

My name is Mark Egan, and I currently live in the Blue Mountains west of Sydney NSW Australia. I’m currently a casual academic tutor/lecturer for a Sydney University, and somewhat semi-retired. I have worked in many science and educational areas, and hold degrees in the biological sciences, education, and psychology.

So, what has brought me here? Well, I have had an interest in the subject reincarnation from a very early age, and I mean very early. From early on, I have had disjointed ‘memories’, and experiences (some quite complex), as a child. These did not make sense and were too involved to be explained as the imaginings of a child, especially one with limited life experience.

My first encounter with the concept of reincarnation was when I was about 8 years old and reading a newspaper article about the Pollock Twins. I found the story fascinating. It sort of stuck with me. Over the years I’ve looked into many more accounts, trying to sift through the truth from the not so truthful.

These past few decades have lead to an explosion of interest in the subject due to the advent of the internet. But along with that, a lot of misinformation has surfaced as well. So it’s very important I feel to employ critical thinking skills when looking at a possible case for reincarnation.

The subject also throws up a lot of important questions too. Such as:

Why do children ‘remember’ a past life like it was just yesterday when in fact decades have passed?

What was going on ‘in-between’ that time? Why is the in-between phase not remembered just as clear?

If we survive death, then what form do we actually exist in? It’s not sufficed to say ‘well as a spirit’, because that actually means nothing! We need to be asking questions about the very nature of consciousness, as this holds the key to a lot of our questions.

Anyway, I digress. I’m glad to be onboard and hope that the ICRR blossoms into a fully fledged scientific endeavour exploring the fascinating phenomenon of reincarnation. And, if there is anyone in the Sydney or NSW area doing their own research and needs a helping hand, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Kind regards,

Mark T. Egan.

Thanks, Mark, for your long and very thoughtful introduction! You have had a very interesting journey. I for one am interested to know more about your past-life experiences, insofar as you’re comfortable sharing them. Opening a past-life log in that section of the forum is an option. Do you recall remembering, or still directly remember, or have you forgotten the past life (lives?) and know about your remembering as a child from witnesses?

For those reading this who are not familiar with the Pollock Twins: https://psi-encyclopedia.spr.ac.uk/articles/pollock-twins-reincarnation-case .

You have identified some very key questions indeed, and while I’ll provide info and insights where I can, I certainly don’t have firm answers to any of them.

>Why do children ‘remember’ a past life like it was just yesterday when in fact decades have passed?

Millennia in my case!  (It’s not as strong as some other cases, but I have some good verifications of having been a soldier in the time and region occupied by the culture known as ancient Greece, and there’s evidence that I remembered much better as a young child.)

I think the answer to this relates to the time-defying nature of memory itself. Memory is impressions in the mind of previous times. Any time we remember anything including in our current lives, we are mentally returning to the past and its images and emotions and what-have-you will be as they were then, whether it’s yesterday or 400 BCE.

>What was going on ‘in-between’ that time?

For some insight on this, see here: https://psi-encyclopedia.spr.ac.uk/articles/reincarnation-intermission-memories

>Why is the in-between phase not remembered just as clear?

As past lives, I gather you mean?  I’m speculating here but existence on the other side seems to have something of an ineffability to it; often people who’ve had NDEs (the best-remembered recollections of the other side) will say that aspects of it were indescribable.  Whereas past lives are lived in the physical world, the same world we’re in now, complete with its languages designed to describe what is in the physical world.  Perhaps also it’s easier to relate to, making it easier to recall.  But again, this is sheer speculation.

>If we survive death, then what form do we actually exist in? It’s not sufficed to say ‘well as a spirit’, because that actually means nothing! We need to be asking questions about the very nature of consciousness, as this holds the key to a lot of our questions.

Well, yes, this is the key question, the brass ring of reincarnation research: what is the exact nature of consciousness, both in and of itself, and in relation to the physical body?  What is consciousness made of, that can be measured?  How exactly do individual consciousness and body connect?  Because we can’t know how reincarnation really works without knowing that. Scientists are working on figuring this out.

Thanks again, Mark, for joining ICRR. I’m glad you’ve come on board because we need smart, dedicated & thoughtful people to help us get the reincarnation research news out there, not to mention create more reincarnation research news.

Excelsior!

Hi KM,

Thanks for the reply.

In regards to my questions, there are a lot of them! For instance; where/how is memory stored/retrieved while in the in-between phase? How/what exactly is the relationship of consciousness with the body? How does it integrate with the body?Notice I don’t use the terms spirit or soul. I feel these are outdated and restrictive. These are just a few questions out of many I’ve pondered about.

As for my own personal experiences, many of these occurred when I was very young, some when I was no more than a toddler some 60 years ago.

Let’s kick off with the first:

1. I remember waking up as a baby with the same type of nightmare. In it I was saying goodbye to a lot of people and walked across a bridge structure towards large building. I enter and I’m met by a few people. They guide to a table and tell me lay down. I do so, and as I lie I look up and notice that the room has a domed roof/ceiling which is changing colours. Quiet pretty! While typing this I suddenly got the feeling of Christmas and Christmas lights! Anyway, I hear a noise, like the sound of cicadas singing, but I can feel it through my ‘body’. The table holds me in tight, and the ceiling colours begin to rapidly change and pulsate. The ‘cicada’ noise speeds up as well, and suddenly I can feel the noise as pain throughout my body, then I feel being crushed/squeezed. Everything becomes confusing and I wake up screaming! I have a clear memory of this, and my mother coming in to pick me up out of the cot. I remember her saying; ‘poor Boy, he’s had a bad dream!’. Then I remember trying yell back at her and saying in my head something like; ‘It wasn’t a bad dream, it was a NIGHTMARE!!!’

2. I have a clear memory of my mother in the kitchen trying to teach me my name. I can see her clearly at the other of the kitchen. She was saying, ‘say Mark, say Mark!’. Then all of a sudden, I hear the familiar sound of ‘cicadas’ in my head, but speeded up, then all of sudden, my mind clears and I’m able to think like an adult! I see the green and black checked Lino on the floor, the warm blue sky of summer through the screen door, then I hear my mother repeating her request. But this time I try to talk back to her, not in english, but in another language, and I’m trying to say, ‘sorry lady, I can’t/don’t understand what you are saying! ‘what are you saying?’ Then suddenly as it started, my mind closes down and I’m back thinking like a child again!

3. I used to have a ‘dream’ of watching a woman in late 1800’s dress fall backwards out of a small boat into the water, and the panic that ensured in people trying to rescue her. I tried researching this as I felt it happened in Sydney (one of the national parks), but unfortunately accidents like this were all too common.

4. I have a ‘memory’ of seeing my sister fall out of the back of the moving car. I was born a twin, and have a twin sister, and used to think that it was she who fell out. I remember a lady telling her not to play with the door handle just before she fell out. Then seeing my sister pull on the door handle and suddenly fall out of the car! I remember hearing screaming!! I asked my mother about this when I was about 7 years old, but was told it never happened. Again, as before, I researched such accidents, and again, these were all too common to narrow down. I feel that when this accident happened, it caused a more devastating accident. Possibly a fatality of everyone else. As a kid, I used to feel like I was ‘out of sync’ and should have ‘started earlier’, but this happened and a reset was needed.

5. This next one gives me the shivers, as I often reminded of it most days going to work. A a very young kid/baby, I used to have a VERY VIVID repeating ‘dream’ which was extremely detailed in every way. In it, I am travelling in a coach drawn by horses. I’m not in the coach, but standing on the back. I feel the time is about the mid 1700’s, either in France, or Spain. There is the driver at the front, the well to do passengers in the coach, and me standing on the back. We are travelling along this long narrow driveway/road with a gutter to my right, and the road is tree lined. We are not going fast, just trotting along, when suddenly four men appear from the side of the road and force the coach to a stop. They want to rob the coach! I feel absolute terror and jump of the back and begin to run as fast as I could back the way we came. I hear a gun shot, and feel a horrible pain in the back of my head, behind my ear on the right side. I fall down into the gutter. A couple of these men come over to see me laying in the gutter face down. That’s when I wake up screaming! Many years later I taught at a school which had a long driveway with a similar to that dream. Every day for years I drove along it and it used to trigger that ‘dream/memory’ most times. Then in my mid 30’s I developed Trigeminal neuralgia on my right side. The pain was similar to that in my dream. It was 7 years before I underwent brain surgery to correct the defect causing the issue. I’ve been in remission since 2002. Also, back in the mid 1990’s I had to get a tooth on my right side removed. The dentist examined me and then out of the blue asked me about the jagged scar on the right side of my chin? I said that I had always had it. Then she look at the X-rays, and said flatly that the scar and X-ray looked like I had taken a small calibre gun shot to that side of my face. I said I have never ever been shot or had any form of accident to that part of my head. I did say that I did have some rather rough dental extractions when I was 11 years old. It was a year later that I developed Trigeminal Neuralgia.

6. This next and final one is a head-scratcher. As a teen, I was into meditation and the usual 70’s stuff teens got up to back then. Anyway, I was trying to get to sleep one hot summer’s night, and finally fell asleep. I had this ‘dream’ and in it I was discussing some in depth topic with a person I could not see. Then all of a sudden I asked them, ‘ok, so who or what was I in the past?’. I don’t know what prompted me to ask that, but the reply was interesting! This person said; ‘Well, don’t you know/remember, you were a Visigoth!’. Then I was shown this scene of a well muscled man, not tall, but sort of stocky, running up this hill. They were holding some type weapon as they ran, and their clothes were a mixture of fur and cloth. From this hill I could see the sea, and a small headland connected to the mainland by a narrow strip of land/beach. Then the scene changed and I was looking at the same place, but it was now. The small headland had a lighthouse on it, and was surrounded by a car park. The narrow strip of connecting land was now a road. I had the feeling it was in the France or Spain area. Still can’t find it on Google Earth for those who may ask. This experience happened when I was about 14 years old. I’d never ever heard of the term ‘Visigoth’ before, and had no interest in history whats so ever! But I’ve never forgot it.

Anyway, I’ll leave it here. I think I’ve gone long enough. Now, this is the very first time ever that I’ve mentioned anything like this in any public arena. I’ve never ever mentioned any of this to anyone, friends or family for fear of ridicule. Especially since I’m very much in the public eye in the job I do. Saying that, I feel strongly that it’s time to get it off one’s chest so to speak. Anyway, that’s my story.

All the best,

Regards

Very interesting thread, Mark!  I second KM that the questions you ask are the ones we are also asking. Although research has been done by looking at the body of cases, there are still a lot of gaps. I also wonder about this:
If we survive death, then what form do we actually exist in?
It’s the question I’ve been asking. Even with the experiences I’ve had and the verifications and ‘luck’ of being able to find three of my ‘previous lives’, it’s still a question that I don’t quite know how to put my finger on. For me it leaves a lot of questions such as: if we die and live again, and we forget who we were before, what exactly is the purpose here? The reincarnation process doesn’t strike me as very efficient given that we have to keep learning and re-learning the same things time and again. I’ve always had this internal frustration of being ‘here’ again, and having to re-learn things, again. The process almost seems like a corrupted file on a computer because I can only remember fragments — enough to know it’s frustrating, not enough that I can just recall everything I once knew and do not need to re-learn aspects of life. Take learning to drive. I knew how to drive in my last life. That didn’t make it easier for me to drive in this life. I had to re-learn from scratch. Yet, there I am with memories of that life that seem useless to me and detrimental.

Anyway, I digress.

Your memory accounts here all seem inline with what we see RE: past life memories. Very, very interesting and intense. You’re inspiring me to go write mine up here somewhere, which I think I will do as it’s been a while since I’ve written about my experiences. BTW, this forum is also private and members only, so anyone browsing on the net won’t be able to see what you have written. Rest assured we take privacy very seriously, anyone breaching the rules of the forum will be dealt with. We ask folks to treat this like a private conversation, so nothing goes out of here without express sharing permission given by the author.

Going back to what you’ve written, this part of your shooting account in particular struck a chord:
The dentist examined me and then out of the blue asked me about the jagged scar on the right side of my chin? I said that I had always had it. Then she look at the X-rays, and said flatly that the scar and X-ray looked like I had taken a small calibre gun shot to that side of my face.

Wow. My inner investigator says are you able to get a hold of your dental records and do you have what she said written somewhere? That’s pretty striking, and the fact it lines up with your memory of being shot. That strikes a bell with me as I also have a memory of being shot, and have experienced pain and issues around the area where it occurred. How do you feel about guns now? Would you say you still have issues around this now? What you say about dejavu also makes sense to me, as I have experienced that in places that -remind- me of past life places I’ve been to. It’s a weird sensation.

All very interesting, and thanks again for sharing, will come back to this later with more thoughts.

Cheers,

Ben
